What Is Database Management Software?

Irrespective of the professional arena, any and all information needs to be stored in an organized and orderly manner so that it can be retrieved for review and referral. Earlier, this organization included segregation of relative data into files, folders and drawers causing a space crunch effect with more increase in data. The solution lied in taking all this data and feeding every bit of it into storage devices like computer hard drives, thereby turning the medium into a ‘database’. By using a set of algorithms to perform various processes on the database, managing this database becomes possible. Such an algorithm set or software is better known as a Database Management Software.

These database management softwares have come a long way from simple programs that took ages to find a name from a few hundred names to being fast enough to gather real time information about a subject from multiple computer networks. Simply put, the primary function of a Database Manager is to collect data and store it at a retrievable location. This data is then organised using various programming concepts by the software. When a particular data is requested by a user, the software runs a variety of sub routines to locate that data within the storage unit and reproduces the same. With more data being updated into this system, sorting out relevant data and flushing out garbage data is another process conducted by the Database Management Software package.

The more apt terminology for these softwares is Database Management System or DBMS as each management function is a complex set of algorithms in itself, thereby forming a software package. Some significant DBMS models include hash based, relational and hierarchical types of database management. They find their place in virtually every occupational setup like banks, hospitals, airports, and offices etc where data storage and its efficient manipulation is the call of the hour.
